01. Explore on foot in winter
Savour the silence and the purity of the snow, treat yourself to the pleasure of walking through fields and forests on snowshoes!
A major festival in the Val di Rabbi when the livestock return to the valley from their summer pastures higher up!
The local word Desmalghjada refers to the end of the summer, at the end of another cycle of life with autumn on the way, when it is finally time to leave the verdant high altitude mountain pastures. When the weather starts to cool, the animals return to their owners’ barns, to the great pride of the farmers.
To mark the occasion, the cows are adorned with flowers and colourful ribbons as they descend to the valley in a big parade which involves the whole community. It is a day of celebration for livestock and agricultural farmers which gives visitors a glimpse of the rural traditions of the Val di Rabbi!
The festival features traditional dishes, a farmer’s market, an auction of cheese produced up on the summer pastures, a lot of music and dancing which all contribute to an unforgettable September Sunday!
